About Our Schools

What is a charter school?

Charter schools are public schools that operate independently of local school districts. Like district schools, they follow state and federal guidelines, but they have more flexibility to meet students' needs in creative, effective ways.

Are NHA schools tuition-free?

Yes! All NHA schools are tuition-free public charter schools. There is no cost to attend.

How are NHA schools different from other schools?

NHA schools combine academic excellence with strong character education through our Moral Focus™ program. We focus on partnership with parents and personalized support to help each child thrive.

Who can attend NHA schools?

Any child who meets age and residency requirements can apply to attend an NHA school.

Applying to an NHA School

How do I get started?

Visit our find a school page to search for NHA schools near you. Once you’ve found a good fit, visit each school’s website to explore programs, contact the admissions team, or schedule a tour. It’s a great way to learn more and take the first step toward applying.

When should I apply?

We encourage families to apply during Open Enrollment. If more applications are received than seats available, a random lottery will take place. Applications are still accepted after Open Enrollment and are considered on a first-come, first-served basis.

How does the lottery work?

If needed, a random selection lottery is held to fill available seats. Remaining applicants are placed on a waiting list. Siblings of enrolled students may receive preference.

Can I apply to more than one NHA school?

Yes! You can apply to multiple schools using the same application.

Will my application carry over if my child doesn’t get a seat?

No, applications are valid for one school year only. If your child is on the waitlist and doesn’t get a seat, you’ll need to reapply the following year.

Moral Focus™ Character Development

What is Moral Focus™?

Moral Focus™ is NHA’s character development program. Each month, students learn about a different virtue—like respect, responsibility, or perseverance—through classroom lessons, stories, and real-life examples.

Why is Moral Focus™ part of the curriculum?

We believe strong character is just as important as strong academics. Moral Focus™ helps students make good choices, build confidence, and develop leadership skills that support success in school and life.

How is Moral Focus™ taught in the classroom?

Each month centers on a single virtue. Teachers introduce the virtue through stories, discussions, and activities that help students understand, practice, and apply it in their daily lives.

How can I support Moral Focus™ at home?

You can talk about the monthly virtue, celebrate moments of good character, and encourage your child to apply Moral Focus™ values in real life. Many schools also share take-home resources and ideas.

Do all NHA schools use the same Moral Focus™ program?

Yes! All NHA schools follow the same Moral Focus™ curriculum. While each school may have unique ways of celebrating or applying it, the core values remain consistent across the network.

Kindergarten Readiness

Who can attend Kindergarten at an NHA school?

Children who meet age and residency requirements can enroll. Each state has its own guidelines—use our Kindergarten Calculator to find out when your child can start.

What does the kindergarten curriculum include?

Students begin building foundational skills in reading, math, science, and social studies. They also take part in art, music, physical education (PE), and Moral Focus™ character lessons.

How can I help my child get ready for kindergarten?

Read together, practice counting, encourage independence, and explore activities like drawing, cutting, or building. For more tips, check out our Kindergarten Readiness page.

Do NHA schools offer kindergarten events or orientation?

Yes! Many schools offer open houses and orientation events to help families transition smoothly. Contact your local school for details.

What advanced learning options are available at NHA schools?

Through the EXCEL-ERATE program in grades K–8, students take part in faster-paced learning and activities that help them think more deeply. Middle school students can even earn high school credit, giving them a strong start for the future. In high school, students can take Advanced Placement (AP) courses, which provide tough, college-level work and the chance to earn college credit. These programs encourage students to work hard, think critically, and take responsibility for their learning.

How does my child qualify for advanced learning?

Eligibility is based on academic performance and teacher recommendations. Reach out to your school’s principal to learn more.

What will my child learn?

Students may receive advanced content in elementary grades, take high school credit courses in middle school, and participate in dual enrollment or take AP or Honors courses in high school.
