At National Heritage Academies (NHA®), we believe wisdom means more than just being smart, it’s about using knowledge to make good choices. And one of the best ways kids can practice wisdom is by taking an active role in preparing their own school lunches.
When students help pack their lunch, they’re not just choosing between apples or carrots. They’re learning how to fuel their bodies, sharpen their minds, and take ownership of their daily routines.
Kaylee Toth, Manager of Food and Nutrition Services for NHA, puts it simply, “Getting kids involved in making their own meals is fun for the kids and helps them learn to make healthier choices and they’re more likely to actually eat what they help prepare. Why Wisdom Matters at Lunchtime
When kids help make their own meals, they’re practicing wisdom by learning how to:- Choose foods that fuel the brain: A balanced lunch helps them focus and stay ready to learn.
- Think about their future health: Understanding how proteins, whole grains, fruits, and veggies help their bodies makes it easier to make smart food decisions later in life.
- Take responsibility: Making their own lunch builds independence and self-confidence.
So, the next time you're packing lunches, invite your child to join in, because wisdom starts one smart choice at a time.
