Tell us about your journey since you graduated from NHA.
After graduating in 2017 from Canton Prep, I attended Madonna University where I completed my bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. While finishing my degree, I worked at a COVID testing lab where I started out sorting test samples. Once I completed my degree, I was able to start testing the samples. In May of 2022, I started working at the NSF headquarters in Ann Arbor as a Technician in their bottled water lab. In 2023, I began working as a Scientist I in their LCMS (Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry) lab. In August of this year, I was promoted to a Scientist II and am currently analyzing dietary supplements for athletically banned substances as part of our certified for sport program.
Which Moral Focus™ virtue has best shaped your life and why?
Perseverance. Perseverance has helped me become the person that I am today in so many ways. I struggled a lot with my mental health in college, but I still managed to graduate and get a job in my field. There were many times when I wanted to give up, but I received the help and care that I needed and focused on the end goal. Even today I think that perseverance continues to influence and impact my life in a positive way.
How did your NHA schools help prepare you for your academic and life experiences?
I truly do not believe that I would be where I am if I hadn’t attended Canton Prep. I was a first-generation college student and my college counselor at Canton Prep (Tonika Russell) helped me so much. I had access to college fairs and tours as well as getting help with my applications and entrance essays. So many of my teachers had a positive impact on my life because they truly cared about us. Some of the things that Canton Prep offered that were the most beneficial to me were smaller class sizes, tutoring opportunities, AP classes, and having a college counselor on site.
