From Virtual Classroom to Oxford Scholar: PVA Senior Julia Acker's Journey to UW-Milwaukee

This fall, PrepNet Virtual Academy (PVA) senior Julia Acker will attend the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee to study computer science. But before that first day of class, she’s going on an even bigger adventure!

Julia has been accepted into the Oxford Scholars program. This August, she’ll travel to England and study technology, literature, and architecture at the University of Oxford. The two-week program gives graduating seniors a taste of the college environment.

When Julia received the email announcing her acceptance into the prestigious program, she couldn’t wait to tell her parents.

“I came running out to the living room, ‘Guess what I just got?’” she said.

The application process required an essay. Julia focused on the value of experiencing the world firsthand and how travel offers experiences you can’t get from a book.

The PrepNet Virtual Academy Advantage

Through PVA’s early college program, Julia will earn her associate degree in information systems from Davenport University.

That experience has given her more than just a degree, it’s built confidence.

“I know what it’s like to sit in a college class,” Julia said.

And that’s what she’ll be doing at UW-Milwaukee as she works towards a career in web development. Julia is looking forward to attending classes in person. It’s an adjustment she’s ready for, “I’m kind of nervous, but also pretty excited to meet more people and experience more.”

What Julia’s not worried about is learning to manage her time. That’s a skill built into PVA’s curriculum.

“It took a while to figure out what works, but now I think I do a pretty good job managing my time.”

Julia also learned independence and self-advocacy skills that she says will help her in college.

Her mother, Laura, is grateful Julia got to learn those skills during high school.

“PrepNet Virtual Academy has given her the opportunity to spread her wings and manage her time like an adult. That’s something you don’t always get in a traditional setting,” Laura said.

Ready for What’s Next

As Julia prepares to graduate, travel abroad, and begin college, one thing is clear: she’s ready.

Her PVA journey reflects what’s possible when students are supported, challenged, and empowered to take ownership of their learning.

Congratulations Julia!
