Returning to school after summer break can be a big transition for families. But with the right routines in place, you can make it a smooth one for your child.
At National Heritage Academies (NHA®), we’re here to help you and your child feel confident, prepared, and excited about going back to school.
We asked NHA’s Director of School Quality, Doug Hower, to share his Top Five back to school tips for kids.
1. Start the Routine Now
“A strong morning routine begins the evening before,” says Doug Hower. “Parents may want to begin instituting a school 'bedtime' and 'wake up' time in the weeks before the actual start of school.” That means easing away from summer sleep-ins and slowly shifting bedtime and wake-up times to match the school schedule. Even just a week of consistency before your kids return to school can help them feel more rested and more ready to learn.
2. Make Time for “School Talk”
Ask your child how they’re feeling about going back to school. Are they nervous? Excited? Curious about their teacher or classroom? “It’s critically important for parents to talk to their children about the upcoming school year,” Hower shares. “This allows parents to address concerns that their child might have before the first day.” Talking openly can reduce anxiety and help children feel supported as they transition back to the classroom.
3. Visit the School
One of the best ways to ease back into the school routine is to attend your school’s open house. “This small step helps students begin to mentally prepare for the return to school,” says Hower. “It allows them to see their classroom, meet their teacher, and understand the routines of the day.”
4. Ease into Learning
Hower encourages parents to add a little academic time back into their kids’ day. “Just 15 minutes of reading or playing a math game can help shift their mindset toward learning.” Try creating a “study time” each day to focus on reading and writing. You can also visit the library or pick up grade-specific learning books to make this time more fun.
5. Celebrate the Return
Most of all, get excited! Create traditions like a back-to-school breakfast or take a photo on the front porch. Talk about what your child is looking forward to and encourage a positive attitude. With a little planning, your child’s return to school can be a smooth and exciting adventure.
