The Power of Positive Male Role Models in Our Schools: A Guide to Making a Difference

NHA Communications Team  |  June 12, 2025
At National Heritage Academies (NHA®), we believe that every child benefits from seeing positive male role models in their daily lives. Whether it's a dad, grandpa, uncle, or a caring community member, these men play a big part in helping students grow into confident and kind people.

Many students, especially boys, benefit from seeing men who are kind, responsible, and involved. When fathers are role models, they show their children what it means to be caring, honest, and hardworking. This helps kids understand that strength comes from being respectful and doing the right thing.

NHA parent Henry (DJ) Williams volunteers at Forsyth Academy in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He says he’s intentional about showing students not just what a positive role model looks like, but also how to be responsible members of their community.

"When I'm at the school, I always try to teach the males to be gentleman. Take care of everybody. Take care of things even if it's not your responsibility to take care of it and just respect their elders and everyone else around them. It's very fulfilling to see your actions and words impacting students. I just want that sense of community to be something students strive for.”

Williams’s involvement shows students that men care about education and are willing to give their time to help.

In schools, male role models can help students feel safe and supported. They can encourage kids to try their best, stay focused, and believe in themselves. Even simple things like reading a book to a class or helping at recess can make a big difference.

Here are five ways you can be a good role model:
  1. Spend time with your child and show interest in their activities
  2. Treat others kindly and fairly
  3. Admit mistakes and talk about how to make things right
  4. Talk about the importance of school and help with homework when you can
  5. Use kind words and give encouragement when things are tough
At NHA, we encourage all fathers and male guardians to take part in school activities because your presence matters. Remember, being a role model isn't about being perfect, it's about being present and showing kids the value of kindness, responsibility, and hard work. Together we can provide our NHA students with the positive male role models they need to succeed!
