Raising Kids Who Do the Right Thing: Why Integrity Matters
Published: May 05, 2026
As the school year winds down, the learning doesn't have to stop. At National Heritage Academies® (NHA®), we believe character development is a journey that continues beyond the classroom. Our Moral Focus™ program teaches essential virtues like wisdom, respect, and integrity. These help shape how your child treats others and makes wise choices.
Summer is the perfect time to keep these important lessons alive. Discover simple, everyday ways to practice Moral Focus™ virtues at home during the break.
Continue the Conversation
Your child has explored nine virtues throughout the school year: wisdom, respect, gratitude, self-control, perseverance, courage, encouragement, compassion, and integrity. These virtues are central to an NHA education.
- Ask your child which virtue meant the most to them this year and why.
- This can be a great conversation starter at dinner or during a car ride. It helps them reflect on their growth.
Simple Ways to Practice Virtues Daily
You don't need a formal lesson plan to build strong character. Small, consistent habits make a big difference. NHA partners with parents to support students' growth academically and personally.
- Gratitude: Start or end each day by sharing one thing your family is thankful for.
- Compassion: Look for chances to help a neighbor, volunteer together, or simply check in on someone who might need a kind word.
- Perseverance: Encourage your child to stick with a challenge. This could be learning to ride a bike, finishing a book, or trying a new recipe.
- Respect: Practice treating others the way they want to be treated, at home, at the park, and in your community.
- Integrity: Talk about what it means to do the right thing, even when no one is watching.
Read and Grow Together
Books are a wonderful way to explore virtues with your child. Visit your local library and look for stories that highlight courage, kindness, or perseverance.
After reading, ask your child how the characters showed the virtue. Discuss what they might do in a similar situation.
Make it a Summer Challenge
Pick one virtue each week and challenge your family to practice it together. Keep a simple chart on the fridge where everyone can note moments they saw the virtue in action. Celebrate those moments together at the end of each week.
Giving your child the chance to teach a sibling, cousin, or friend about a Moral Focus™ virtue deepens their own understanding and builds confidence.
Virtues in Real Life
Summer brings new experiences, from camps and vacations to time with friends and family. Use these moments to point out virtues in action. Did your child show self-control when they were frustrated? Did they encourage a friend who was nervous about trying something new?
Recognizing these moments helps your child see that character matters everywhere, not just at school.
You're Partnership Makes the Difference
At NHA, we believe education works best when families and schools work together. The values your child practices at school are the same ones you reinforce at home. Your partnership is essential in helping your child become their best self.
We hope your family has a wonderful summer filled with learning, laughter, and character.
