This prestigious national Title I recognition is awarded to schools that close achievement gaps, serve diverse student populations with excellence, and demonstrate outstanding academic performance. Out of more than 2,700 schools across the state, WCA’s achievement is a testament to the dedication of staff, students, and families.
Principal Annastasia Ryan said being named a North Carolina Distinguished School is more than an honor, it’s a powerful celebration of what is possible when belief, hard work, and high expectations come together.
“At Winterville Charter Academy, success is not defined by background, it is driven by mindset and commitment,” she said. “We do not expect every student to look, learn, or behave the same, but we do expect families to shed excuses, embrace our high standards, and actively partner with us in creating a culture where every child can thrive.”

As the only tuition-free public school of choice in the area, WCA staff and students continue set and meet high expectations, stay focused, and let results speak for themselves.
Director of School Quality Steve Pond said this serves as affirmation that WCA is an amazing school with great learning opportunities that provides students the opportunity to succeed.
“It’s a wonderful testament to the amazing work the team is doing in closing the achievement gap among their students,” Pond said. “The instructional and leadership teams should be commended for their individual and combined efforts in focusing on providing a high-quality learning experience for their scholars.”
Principal Ryan said the structure provided by staff and the rules in place help provide an important framework for student growth.
“Rules are not obstacles; they are tools that promote independence, empathy, and excellence. Our uniform symbolizes that individuality comes from within, while kindness, teamwork, and respect must be consistently practiced by all. This award affirms what we have always known: our scholars are capable of greatness, and Winterville Charter Academy is where that greatness is nurtured every day.”
