Phoenix Academy Parents' Bill of Rights FAQ

What is the North Carolina Parents' Bill of Rights?

The North Carolina Parents’ Bill of Rights is legislation recently passed by the North Carolina General Assembly that outlines the basic rights of parents when it comes to educational decisions about their children. It goes into effect Jan. 1, 2024.

What does passage of this legislation mean for parents?

The North Carolina Parents' Bill of Rights outlines the basic rights of parents when it comes to educational decisions about their children. For example the right to school choice; access academic information such as report cards, state test scores, or teaching and learning materials; and make decisions about their children’s upbringing, among others.

What do I do if I have questions about my rights as a parent?

If you have questions about your rights as a parent, you can review a copy of the Phoenix Academy Parents' Bill of Rights here. If you have more questions, contact the school office to speak to a member of our school leadership team.

How do I learn more about my child’s education?

We encourage you to speak with your child’s teacher if you have questions about their learning and development. Your child’s teacher works closely with school leadership to provide teaching and learning opportunities that support student growth.

How will school leaders work with parents to ensure their rights are met?

We value parent partnerships and are committed to ensuring our parents feel they are connected to the school and its educators, and have opportunities to provide meaningful feedback. There are many ways for parents to get involved. Regular contact with your child’s teacher, attending parent-teacher conferences, participating in the bi-annual Voice of Parent survey, and volunteering at the school are some of the ways to engage with us. Know that whenever you have a question about your child’s growth and development, a good first step is connecting with your child’s teacher.

What is the school doing to ensure compliance with this legislation?

In line with this legislation, the school board approved language outlining how Phoenix Academy will support parents and their right to be actively involved in their children’s education. Click here to read more.

Do you have a process to resolve parent concerns or questions?

We encourage parents to connect with their child’s teacher, who will work closely with the school leadership team to resolve your concerns or questions. If you have additional needs, our school leadership team works closely with our management company National Heritage Academies, which has a Parent Relations Department that supports resolution of parent concerns if necessary.

If I have specific questions about instructional materials, whom do I contact?

If you have a concern or question about the instructional materials used in your child’s classroom, we encourage you to contact your child’s teacher, who will work with the school leadership team to address the needs of your family.

What do I do if I want to review the instructional materials used in my child’s classroom?

Requests to review specific instructional materials must be provided in writing to the principal. Please allow 10 business days to process your request. At that time, the principal will either provide the requested information or an extension notice, stating that the information will be provided no later than 20 business days from the date of the request. If you have additional questions about this process, call the school office to schedule a time to discuss them with the school leadership team.
