Georgia Teacher Licensure

Learn more about alternative teacher certifications, and teacher licensure in the state of Georgia!

If you are employed by National Heritage Academies® (NHA®), your certificate must be renewed electronically by your employing district. If you have any questions, please contact your credentialing consultant.

Alternative Teacher Certification

Georgia offers two types of certifications for teachers wanting to get certified who do not hold a bachelor's degree or higher with a major in education: a Provisional Certificate and an Induction Certificate.

A Provisional Certificate is for educators who are currently enrolled in a GaPSC-accepted accredited educator preparation program (including the GaTAPP program). This certificate is valid for three years while the educator completes their program.

An Induction Certificate is for educators who have completed a GaPSC-accepted accredited educator preparation program, but who have outstanding requirements for professional certification (such as testing or Georgia specific requirements). This certificate is valid for up to five years but can be converted to a professional certificate after three years of experience in the field if all outstanding requirements are completed.

Requirements for Licensure

To qualify for an alternative certification, each candidate must:
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Have a passing score on the GACE Program Admission Assessment or hold an exemption.
  • Obtain an "induction level" or higher passing score on the appropriate GACE content area.
  • Have a passing score on the Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment.
  • Be hired as an educator by a Georgia Local Unit of Administration (LUA).
  • Apply to a GaTAPP program or another state-approved educator preparation program. See the resource section below for a list of approved programs.
