Windemere math teacher enjoys 'A Day Made Better'

Windemere Park Charter Academy teacher Kara McKone received a big surprise Oct. 1.

The eighth-grade math teacher was one of the winners in the seventh annual OfficeMax “A Day Made Better” classroom contest.

Each year, office supply retailer OfficeMax Inc. awards 1,000 teachers across the country with a gift of $1,000 worth of classroom supplies.

Teachers are nominated by their principals for their extraordinary efforts in the classroom. McKone was nominated by Windemere principal Yvonne Thomas.

McKone said she had no idea what was going on and was caught off guard. She was presented with a box full of school supplies, including a new digital camera, Kindle Fire tablet and leather office chair.

Her students were just as surprised — and excited.

“I told them: ‘You guys don’t understand, this is all for you,’” said McKone.

“When the students realized the supplies were actually for the class, they wanted to see everything in the box.”

The items included fancy notepads, markers, and colored pencils.

“It will make the students feel like they have above and beyond what we typically provide,” said McKone. “I am a big proponent of rewarding students academically and behaviorally. There’s not enough of everything for everyone but I will use some of those things for special rewards.”
