Student Makes Honor Band

Clarinet player Ruth Hill, an eighth-grade student at Queen’s Grant Charter Academy, is the first at the school to make it into the North Carolina South Central District Honor Band.

Students from Mecklenburg and the surrounding counties audition for this honor. Hill competed against more than 140 clarinet players for one of 32 spots in the honor band.

Trumpet player, Matthew Jewell earned a spot as 2nd alternate in the band, but was not needed to play for the concert. He was ranked 22 out of 80 trumpet auditions.

“These two have been working very hard,” said their band teacher, Bruce Becker.

Hill played in a performance with the honor band on Jan. 28, 2017, at Stuart W. Cramer High School in Belmont, N.C.
