Celebrating Principal Melissa Brandon for National Principal’s Month

NHA Communications Team

October is National Principal’s Month, a time to recognize the dedication, vision, and leadership that drive schools forward. As part of a month-long series highlighting outstanding school leaders, this week's spotlight features PrepNet Virtual Academy (PVA) Principal Melissa Brandon. Nominated by Dean Jennifer Mazza and Dean Liz Newton, Melissa is being celebrated for her extraordinary impact on PVA and the broader virtual learning community.

Building a Foundation from the Ground Up

Melissa’s story at PVA is one of vision and endurance. Standing at the forefront of the school since day one, she helped take PrepNet Virtual Academy from its infancy to the thriving educational community it is today. Long before virtual learning became a mainstay, Melissa saw its potential and continually pushed the boundary of what an online school could achieve.

"I have seen firsthand how much Melissa cares about this school and the people in it," Dean Mazza shared. "She has helped build PVA from the ground up into the successful school it is today, and she continues to look for ways to grow virtual education and create more opportunities for students."

Her steady hand through growth, shifts, and unexpected challenges has cultivated a deep-rooted culture of achievement. That commitment bore tangible fruit at this year's Leadership Summit, where PVA brought home two organization awards for the first time in school history.

Beyond the PVA digital campus, Melissa’s expertise is actively shaping the broader landscape of online education across the National Heritage Academies® (NHA®) network. This school year, she played a pivotal role in creating and launching NHA’s newest virtual offering, National Heritage Online Academy-North Carolina (NHOA-NC), all while keeping PVA running with unwavering clarity and direction.

A Leader Who Grows Other Leaders

True leadership isn't just about guiding a school; it's about lifting others into leadership alongside you. Both Dean Mazza and Dean Newton point to Melissa’s intentional focus on mentorship as one of her defining traits. Rather than directing from the top down, Melissa creates space for her administrative team to take ownership, innovate, and solve complex problems.

"One of Melissa's greatest strengths is her ability to grow leaders," Dean Newton noted. "She has intentionally invested in developing the Dean Team as instructional leaders, giving us opportunities to lead, problem-solve, and strengthen our impact on teachers and students."

That deliberate approach creates a powerful chain reaction across the entire school. As Dean Mazza explained, "Her leadership has a ripple effect because when she helps us become stronger leaders, we are better able to do the same for the teachers and staff we support."

Balancing Innovation with Heart

High standards and genuine empathy don't always go hand-in-hand, but Melissa balances the two seamlessly. Whether stepping into operational gaps, guiding new staff, or supporting leaders through network expansion, she keeps people at the center of every decision.

Dean Newton highlighted this unique balance.

"Melissa has a unique ability to balance innovation with people. Whether launching new initiatives, supporting new staff members, mentoring leaders launching NHOA-NC, or navigating the challenges that come with a growing virtual school, she consistently leads with vision, flexibility, and a focus on excellence."

Through years of sustained effort, Melissa has cultivated something far deeper than a digital learning platform. She has built a dedicated community bound by a shared purpose.

"She has built more than a virtual school," Dean Mazza reflected. "She has built a team of people who believe in what we are doing and who continue to push one another to make PVA better for our students and families."

Thank you, Principal Brandon, for your steadfast leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to PrepNet Virtual Academy and the National Heritage Academies family!
