Buddy Club Creates Opportunities for Guidance, Encouragement, and Friendship

The Middle School Buddy Club at Peak Charter Academy pairs students one-on-one with Exceptional Children students. They offer each other guidance, encouragement, and friendship throughout the school year.

“What began as simply another club—complete with thoughtful applications from students eager to participate—quickly grew into something much more meaningful,” Special Education Teacher Courtney Smith said.

The Buddies learned lessons in patience, teamwork, empathy, and inclusion, while building genuine, lasting connections.

“One of our Buddies made a note just after week one that this was the best club he's ever been a part of at Peak.”

The Buddies recently supported each other during the Wake County Special Olympics where the school’s EC students competed in events such as the softball throw, standing long jump, and various running activities.

“Our school community played an equally important role in making this experience so special. From creating artwork displayed in the school vestibule, to offering words of encouragement, cheering on our athletes, and promoting teamwork, the support was felt every step of the way.”

Athletes started training for the event last fall, and the Buddy Club members supported them every step of the way. Smith said this support captures the important work being done at Peak, and helps create a community where everyone is seen, valued, and included.

“Seeing a familiar Buddy in the hallway, sharing smiles, and feeling supported by a wider community creates moments that extend far beyond the events themselves.”
