The Courage to Lead: Young Scholars Redefine Growth at the Gentleman’s Brunch

At Brooklyn Excelsior Charter School, young scholars are learning exactly what it takes to be a gentleman. When Behavior Specialist Christopher Yard noticed a growing need for spaces designed to uplift and guide young men outside the traditional classroom, the "Gentleman’s Brunch" was born.

“I wanted to create an environment that combines mentorship, community, and intentional conversation, something that felt both welcoming and impactful," said Yard. "The brunch format allowed for that balance, relaxed enough to be comfortable but purposeful enough to leave a lasting impression.”

Yard invited staff members, mentors, and supportive adults to share their stories and experiences, all of whom shared the common goal of investing in these young men's growth. Each guest was selected for their ability to model leadership, accountability, positive communication, and courage.

Now in its third year, the Gentleman’s Brunch continues to offer fresh lessons. This year’s discussions centered on personal hygiene, thoughtful decision-making, the importance of finishing what you start, identifying genuine friendships, and maintaining a positive outlook during challenging times.

“What surprised me most was how eager the scholars were to participate and how seriously they took the conversations,” Yard explained. “They were not just present physically; they were mentally and emotionally engaged. It reinforced the idea that when students are given meaningful opportunities and trusted with mature discussions, they have the courage to rise to the occasion.”

While many Moral Focus™ virtues are woven into the event, February’s virtue of Courage was particularly evident. Through dedicated mentorship and a safe environment, scholars found the courage to engage naturally with the adults in the room, listening closely, asking questions, and reflecting on the wisdom shared. The event highlighted the power of creating spaces where young men feel seen, respected, and guided.

Reflecting on the event, Yard hoped the scholars would walk away with several key takeaways that would serve them well beyond the classroom. He emphasized that accountability and self-respect are essential, as these traits are directly reflected in how young men carry themselves and the choices they make. He also highlighted the power of mentorship, teaching the scholars that seeking guidance and learning from the experiences of positive role models is a sign of true strength rather than a weakness. Finally, he wanted them to realize that brotherhood is a cornerstone of success; by supporting and uplifting their peers, they create a stronger, more confident community for everyone.

Moving forward, Mr. Yard and Brooklyn Excelsior plan to make the Gentleman’s Brunch an annual tradition, with plans to host similar events and potentially expand the program to include other schools.

“The response from families and staff was overwhelmingly positive," Yard noted. "Many expressed appreciation for the intentional focus on character and leadership. There was a shared sense that events like this fill an important need and strengthen the partnership between school, family, and community. Beyond the planned conversations, the most meaningful outcome was the sense of belonging. The Gentleman’s Brunch was about more than just one morning; it was about planting seeds of confidence, courage, responsibility, and purpose.”

Ultimately, the Gentleman’s Brunch served as a powerful reminder that the virtue of Courage is found in more than just bold actions; it is found in the quiet strength required to be authentic and vulnerable. By stepping into these mature conversations, the scholars demonstrated the courage to listen, to ask difficult questions, and to hold themselves accountable to a higher standard. As these young men return to their classrooms and communities, they carry with them the understanding that true courage involves standing tall in their values and having the bravery to lead by example. This event was more than just a meal; it was a call to action for every scholar to walk with purpose and the heart of a gentleman.
