A Trip to Mackinac Island Provides Prevail Students with History Lesson, Plenty of ‘Firsts’

Prevail Academy third graders were treated to an immersive day in history at the end of their school year as they visited Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island, between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan.

After an early rise and bus trip, the group visited Colonial Michilimackinac to see the fort as it was in 1779 during the American Revolution. Students then made their way to the island on a ferry boat to explore.

"It was a very cool experience and so special to be a part of many of the scholars first time on the island!” Prevail K-3 Dean Stacey Jovanovski said. “Some kids said it was their first boat ride too. Others enjoyed telling us about similar family trips and how special it was to do it with friends this time."

"They truly enjoyed being kids and smiled the most when discovering their way around the forts, giggling while large waves sprayed us on the ferry, and shopping with their very own spending money!"

Students were surprised to find they would experience a real cannon being fired at the fort, and enjoyed a horse-drawn carriage ride to scenic parts of the island.

"Our scholars asked the most amazing questions while on a 90-minute horse carriage tour,” Jovanovski said. “The tour guide was amazing at listening to and answering their questions and made them laugh a lot! He tried to be super relational and shared with them that he learns from students what he should put in his presentations to keep up with their interests. I thought that was pretty cool of him to tell them and made them feel important!"
