A Different Kind of Public School

For more than 30 years, National Heritage Academies® (NHA®) has worked to give families a choice in public education. We partner with public charter schools and communities to provide the experience, resources, and support schools need to help students succeed.

Today, NHA supports more than 100 partner schools across nine states, serving more than 65,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade. While every school has its own community, our shared commitment remains the same: helping students reach their potential in school and in life.

Our Story

Built on a Parent's Belief

NHA founder J.C. Huizenga became a father and started seeing education differently. He believed every child deserved access to a great education, and that schools should be accountable for delivering it.

That belief led him to open the first National Heritage Academies school, Excel Charter Academy, in 1995. More than 30 years later, it still drives everything we do.

Why Families Choose NHA

Results that Matter

At National Heritage Academies, academic excellence is a standard, not a goal. Many NHA partner schools outperform their local district on state academic proficiency tests. Teachers track student progress regularly and adjust their approach so every child keeps moving forward.

Your child will be challenged to think critically, work hard, and take ownership of their learning.

Character Development

Strong academics are only part of the picture. Through the Moral Focus™ program, students build virtues such as respect, responsibility, compassion, perseverance, and integrity. Character development is woven into everyday school life, shaping how students treat each other and approach challenges.

Parents consistently report that Moral Focus has a positive impact on their child's behavior and character, both in school and at home.
