Character That Lasts a Lifetime

At National Heritage Academies® (NHA®), we believe a great education shapes more than what a child knows. It shapes who they become. Through our Moral Focus™ program, students build virtues like respect, courage, and compassion and learn to practice them at school, at home, and in their communities.

Learning to do the right thing matters just as much as learning to read or solve a math problem. When students make thoughtful choices, treat others with kindness, and take responsibility for their actions, they build habits that carry them forward in school and in life.

Four out of five parents say NHA's Moral Focus™ program has had a positive impact on their child.

The Nine Virtues

Monthly Moral Focus Virtues

Each month of the school year, students focus on a new virtue through the Moral Focus™ program. At least three days a week, students take part in age-appropriate stories, discussions, and activities that bring each virtue to life. Over time, these lessons help students understand what good character looks like and how to practice it every day.

Why it Matters

How Character Development Helps Students Grow

Students who build strong character early carry those habits with them for life. Here are a few ways the Moral Focus program makes a difference:

Greater Peace of Mind

Students who learn right from wrong tend to worry less and feel more confident. When they know what they stand for, they face challenges with a positive attitude.

Better Choices

Students with strong values are more likely to make thoughtful, informed decisions. They are less likely to give in to peer pressure and more willing to do what is right.

A Sense of Purpose

When students think about how their actions affect others, they start to see themselves as part of something bigger. This helps them grow into caring, responsible people who give back to those around them.

Weekly Questions to Guide the Conversation

Character grows stronger when it's practiced at school and at home. These weekly questions are a simple way to keep that learning going. Ask your child what they're working on, talk through the questions together, and look for everyday moments to put the virtue into practice. When families and schools focus on the same values, students carry those lessons well beyond the classroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Moral Focus

Moral Focus™ is NHA's character development program. Students learn a different virtue each month, like compassion, perseverance, and wisdom, and practice applying them in everyday situations. These lessons help them build strong character and make good choices at school, at home, and in their communities.

At NHA, we believe academic success and strong character go hand in hand. When students learn to treat others well and take responsibility for their actions, they are better prepared to succeed in school, in relationships, and in life.

Students are encouraged to make good choices and treat others with respect every day. This helps create a positive school environment. Many parents and teachers notice that students become more responsible, kind, and confident over time.

Families can support the program by talking about the monthly virtues at home and pointing out positive choices in everyday moments. Many schools also share activities and resources to help character development continue beyond the classroom.

Yes, every NHA school follows the Moral Focus program. Each school may bring the virtues to life in its own way through events, projects, and classroom discussions, but the core program is the same across the network.
