Macomb County Deputy Visits Prevail Academy Students to Teach Safety Tips

Middle school students at Prevail Academy recently participated in a presentation developed by the Macomb County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) to learn about online safety. A deputy visited the school to discuss social media safety, digital footprints, cyberbullying, trafficking, and the responsibilities that come along with the use of technology.

Middle school parents and guardians were also invited to attend and were encouraged to learn along with their students to be able to engage in a healthy dialogue about the subject. Over 15 families joined the assembly!

“This is our second year partnering with the Macomb County Sheriff's Office,” said Nicole Laney, dean of middle school and special education at Prevail Academy. “It's proven to be beneficial as far as keeping parents and students informed about the dangers and legal repercussions of inappropriate social media use.”

The presentation aligned with September's Moral Focus virtue of the month, wisdom, by teaching students how to make wise choices regarding their technology use. The presentation also focused on the school’s ongoing consistent proactive approach to school safety by sustaining a positive school culture.

The school has developed a partnership with MCSO to ensure students are learning techniques to stay safe online after seeing the use of social media skyrocket over recent years.

“As social media safety and appropriateness became a greater need within our middle school, we strengthened our partnership by teaming with the Macomb Area Computer Enforcement (MACE) reserve unit to proactively keep our scholars safe and in-the-know.”

School leaders are constantly working to stay ahead of the game to keep scholars and stakeholders informed of the risks associated with the use of social media and online applications. The primary goal is to ensure that scholars are making wise choices inside and outside of the school.

“Our greatest responsibility when working with our Prevail scholars is to keep them safe. We look forward to our continued partnership with our parents, community members, and local law enforcement to keep Prevail a safe place for all!” said Laney.
