Johnson Embodies Moral Focus by Helping Out at Home in Liberia

NHA Communications Team

Weaving Moral Focus virtues into discussions and activities helps students at National Heritage Academies (NHA®) schools become well-rounded individuals. Aumonae Johnson, a special education paraprofessional at Phoenix Academy, is the living embodiment of those ideals not just in the classroom, but for helping people where she grew up in West Africa.

Johnson goes back to Liberia each summer to help people with a variety of basic needs. This past summer, she helped open a library in her late mother’s name, something the people never had access to previously. She has worked with girls who were abused and in medical clinics. She has paid for scholarships for several kids to go to school and brings with her books and supplies.

Johnson’s dedication to helping others through kindness exemplifies the kind of person students can aspire to become from having learned from her.

“Coming back to see kids grow and keeping that family community is very, very important,” she said. “For me as an employee of the school, we have to set an example, try to mentor other young people and younger teachers, and show the kids what a healthy environment looks like. I’m glad I’ve been able to do that at work.”

Even with all Johnson has given to her home, work remains. She still wants to help provide the school with roof repairs and other needs such as benches and chairs it is waiting on through the government. She also wants to open a shelter for victims of abuse.

“I’m going keep pushing and doing what I do for humanity,” she said. “For me, it’s helping them to see life in a different light.”

Johnson is in her eighth year at Phoenix, which outperforms the district. She has enjoyed being part of a school community that is nearing 30 years in High Point and looks forward to supporting future generations.

“The most important thing is we treat each other as family,” she said.

Keep up the excellent work, Mrs. Johnson!
