More than 50 students submitted applications to join the council this year. They were asked to write about why they should be accepted and were required to provide recommendations from teachers as well.
Seven students in 6th through 8th grades campaigned and wrote inspiring speeches in hopes of earning votes from their classmates during a special assembly.
“What impressed me about the students running were students who are usually very shy and quiet were the ones who were the most vocal about changes that they would like to see in their 6-8 hallway,” Middle School Dean Marshelia Williams said.
Williams and Instructional Coach Jennifer Dooley are both advisors to the student council, which has 15 active members and meets once a week after school.
“The group that was elected ranged from quiet/shy to strong academic leadership, to very vocal within the hallway,” Williams said. “They are strong willed, intellectual and want what's best for their school and peers.”
All middle school students attended the assembly and parents were invited as well. Candidates also created posters to promote their candidacy in the hallways.
Williams said she was impressed with the outcome and noted the significance of getting students involved in their school community at this age.
“This opportunity is vital for young people,” she said. “It gives them a sense of purpose, teaches them responsibility, leadership, community, and how our judicial system works. It teaches them that there are processes that have to be followed in order for change to happen.”
