This innovative project was a partnership between the Food Science elective and the school's cafeteria staff. It was a delicious way to combine lessons in nutrition and exercise while helping students discover their own abilities.

Walker Charter Academy students pedaling hard to mix their smoothies.
The idea was simple: use bikes to blend smoothies. This hands-on approach immediately excited the students. They were curious about how the bikes worked to create their tasty treats, thinking it was cool to both ride a bike and then enjoy a fresh smoothie. This kind of active learning helps students understand how science applies to everyday life, from mechanics to healthy eating.

They tasted so good some students were willing to pedal for seconds!
Making smoothies was a fun challenge. The blender took a bit longer than students expected, and they learned they had to pedal at a certain speed to make it work right. This required focus and perseverance. During the activity, students cheered each other on with shouts of "You can do this!" as classmates pedaled for about five minutes to create their drinks. This moment truly showed how our Moral Focus™ program virtues, like perseverance and encouragement, come to life.

Students were motivated by their hard work knowing smoothies waited at the end.
The Food Science elective teacher, Rosalina Adkins loves creating engaging and unique learning experiences. She credits the cafeteria staff for their key role in bringing this idea to school. This collaboration highlights the strong partnership within our school community.
The smoothies were a big hit, with many students coming back for seconds!
This project at Walker Charter Academy shows how learning helps students discover their own abilities.
