As families explore whether online learning may be the right fit, Melissa Brandon, principal of NHA partner-school PrepNet Virtual Academy (PVA), offers guidance based on years of experience leading a successful K–12 online school.
Experience Leading a Large Online School
Brandon has spent more than 25 years in education, serving as a teacher, instructional coach, learning consultant, and school leader. For the past five years, she has led PrepNet Virtual Academy, a fully online school serving more than 1,000 students across grades K–12.Her work has helped shape a virtual learning environment where students stay connected to teachers, families remain engaged in the learning process, and students develop the habits needed to succeed in an online setting.
Earlier in her career, Brandon also helped strengthen virtual instruction across National Heritage Academies by working with a collaborative group of 67 department leaders supporting more than 29,000 students. This experience helped refine strategies for effective online teaching and learning.
Today, she shares practical advice with families considering online learning with NHOA.
Five Tips to Help Students Succeed in Online Learning
Based on her experience leading a large online school, Brandon encourages students and families to build a few simple habits that support strong learning at home.
Create a dedicated learning space.
Students benefit from having a consistent area for schoolwork. A quiet, well-lit space with minimal distractions helps students stay focused during lessons and independent work time.
Start the day prepared.
Before logging in, students should gather the materials they need for the day. This may include notebooks, textbooks, pencils, and a fully charged device.
Stay organized.
Posting a daily schedule and tracking assignments helps students manage their responsibilities. Many families find it helpful to use a planner or digital calendar to stay on track.
Ask questions when needed.
Online learning still includes strong teacher support. Students should reach out to teachers whenever they feel stuck or need clarification on an assignment.
Take care of your health.
Healthy habits support learning. Students should take breaks, stay active, drink water, and step away from screens when possible.
A Structured Approach to Online Learning
Online learning works best when students have clear expectations, consistent schedules, and support from both teachers and families. Schools like PVA and NHOA are designed to provide that structure. Students learn from certified teachers, follow a clear daily schedule, and receive the resources needed to stay engaged in their education. With guidance from experienced virtual educators like Melissa Brandon, families can feel confident exploring online learning options that support both academic success and personal growth.
