2014 CollegeBoundTM Scholarship Winner Prepares for Graduate School

The year was 2014, but DesTiny Overton remembers the ruse well. As a member of the choir at Buffalo United Charter School, Overton was prepared to sing during a school assembly when she heard the choir portion of the presentation had been cancelled. Puzzled, she made her way to the gymnasium where she realized the assembly was being held to celebrate her as a recipient of the NHA CollegeBoundTM Scholarship.

“I was quite shocked,” Overton said. “No one really had applied for the scholarship (from BUCS) in previous years, so I had decided to give it a shot. I am glad I did so. All of my teachers were proud of me, and I felt very accomplished.”

Overton is now a senior at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., where she’ll graduate with her bachelor's degree this spring as a Health and Wellness major with a Strength and Conditioning minor. She’s currently waiting to hear back on applications to graduate schools to continue her dream of becoming a pediatric oncologist.

Volunteer work has been a priority for Overton throughout her time in high school and college. She has helped at community gardens and was a part of the YRoswell Street Team, a group of students who work to put an end to cancer. She is currently an intern at a pediatric clinic and has performed research at the University at Buffalo and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“I went on remote medical immersions with the pre-med center at Canisius College. All are great experiences, and I am glad I was able to obtain the opportunities at my college.”

Overton has fond memories of Buffalo United and said she misses the teachers and staff that helped her on her journey.

“I am glad for the amazing opportunities BUCS had to offer.”
