Southside Promotes Student Growth, Reading and Language Skills

Good schools present opportunities for everyone they serve, and Southside Academy Charter School in Syracuse, New York, provides for their students and families in numerous ways. Recently, that meant holding a special evening for English Language Learners.

The school welcomed numerous families and provided valuable resources for learning and reading, while offering games for children and food for all.

Included in the event was a representative from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, an organization led by the famous country music artist which mails free children’s books throughout the country, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Ireland.

“It was very successful,” Dean of Special Education and Intervention Danielle Wells said. “A special shout out to EL Teachers Mikian Royer and Genevieve Dougherty for planning this fantastic event. It was a great success and there was planning to every last detail.”

Also in attendance were representatives from the New York Literacy Coalition, Syracuse University, and other neighboring schools.

 Senior Admissions Representative James Mathis helped discuss enrollment opportunities with parents, while fellow staff members Kelly Rossiter, Margret Rodas, Sarah Redmond, Wayne Yaddow, and Kelly Teller helped with the event and engaged with families.

Younger visitors were able to enjoy math games and flash cards and learn about internet safety. It’s that kind of dedication to student growth that has helped Southside outperform the local school district for the past 15 years.
