Students Receive Safety Advice Straight from the New York City Police Department
When it comes to learning about safety, sometimes you need to go straight to the professionals. That’s why students at Riverton Street Charter School in St. Albans, N.Y., recently got a visit from members of the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Detective Keith Richardson and Sergeant Luis Desous talked with students of all ages as part of Riverton’s school safety day.

On school safety day, scholars were engaged and asked questions as they discussed topics ranging from bullying to social media. They also learned about the dangers of vaping and smoking and how a simple toy can sometimes look like a weapon from a distance.

Sharon Jones, an academic behavior specialist, organized the event for the school, which has outperformed the local district for 10 years. She said one of the most important messages that resonated with students was how their actions can have consequences, even at a young age.
“They didn't realize a 7-year-old can be put in detention and your parents can be liable for your actions,” said Jones.

Detective Richardson and Sergeant Desous also spoke with students about ways to use caution when it comes to one of their favorite after-school activities, online gaming.
“They emphasized that if there's anyone you don't know who joins a game or if someone is doing something that makes you uncomfortable, always tell your parents,” said Jones.

She believes learning about safety information from law enforcement professionals is significant for students.
“Once they see the uniform, and someone they identify as knowing a lot about safety, they really perk up and listen.”
Jones says plans are already in the works to bring the officers back next year to reinforce these messages.
“If we keep putting information out there hopefully it will sink in,” Jones said.

Great job Riverton for teaming up with the NYPD to make safety a top priority!
