North Saginaw’s Safety Patrol Builds Leaders and Protects 'Littles'

NHA Communications Team

At North Saginaw Charter Academy, fifth graders are taking on a big responsibility: keeping their younger peers safe while learning what it truly means to be a leader. Guided by Physical Education Teacher Casey Helmreich, the school’s Safety Patrol program has become a cornerstone initiative designed to foster safety, accountability, and character development.

Now in her eighth year running the program, Helmreich has turned the patrol into a sought-after role that blends practical safety duties with meaningful mentorship.

A Professional Start to Student Leadership

Becoming a member of the Safety Patrol isn't just a matter of signing up; fifth graders go through a competitive application and interview process designed to prepare them for real-world responsibilities. With only 16 available spots, students apply at the start of the year and answer questions about teamwork, motivation, and conflict resolution before sitting down for a formal interview.

"They all get a little nervous. They tell their parents, 'I have to practice the questions and everything,'" Helmreich shared. "I only have 16 spots. The Safety Patrol helps with Young Fives, kindergarten, and first grade. I have two safety patrol team members on each of those classes."

This interview process sets the tone for the level of ownership and professionalism expected from each team member.

"They're responsible for their badges and vests. It's like their uniform. They put it on every day," said Helmreich.

Ensuring Safety from the Hallways to the Bus Line

The primary daily mission of the Safety Patrol is ensuring that North Saginaw’s youngest learners safely transition from their classrooms to their dismissal routes at the end of the day.

Patrol members arrive outside classrooms right before dismissal to assist teachers and students. From helping young children zip up winter coats to guiding them safely to the bus, the fifth graders serve as crucial support pillars.

"Some teachers will have them hold hands with the students that are a little nervous, it's super cute. I have two fifth-grade boys that each have bus buddies. They have assigned buddies that they hold hands and walk out to the bus with," Helmreich noted.

In addition to end-of-day dismissal support, patrol members take on patriotic responsibilities by handling flag duty.

"The kids that are assigned to learn how to fold the flag properly and learn about flag etiquette," Helmreich explained.

Looking ahead, the patrol will also assist during all-school assemblies by sitting alongside the younger students to help them maintain focus, as well as greeting guests at school music concerts and events.

Cultivating Character and Moral Focus

While physical safety is the core duty, cultivating young leaders through National Heritage Academies'® (NHA®) Moral Focus™ program is at the heart of the initiative. Helmreich frequently ties the program's expectations back to the Moral Focus™ virtues displayed in the gym.

During their initial team meeting, Helmreich establishes clear expectations for how the partners work together and hold each other accountable.

"You guys are responsible for keeping check of each other: Are we working together as a team? Are we following directions? Are we using self-control?" Helmreich stated. "So, we reiterate the virtues quite often."

This focus on character serves as a powerful incentive for students who are navigating the transition into middle school maturity.

"Safety patrol has actually been kind of an incentive to say, 'Hey, the littles are looking up to you as leaders and they're watching and the teachers in the building see your vest on you and your name badge and they're watching to see if you’re making the right choices and if you’re showing leadership,'" Helmreich emphasized.

Making an Impact Across the School Community

The program’s impact reaches beyond dismissal time. Teachers across the building actively reinforce the values of the Safety Patrol, holding the fifth graders accountable to high standards of behavior wherever they go.

"Every classroom teacher in the building knows that if they see one of my kids in the orange vest, they better be doing the right thing," Helmreich said.

For the students involved, the pride and sense of ownership are evident, not only in their daily routines, but in how they reflect on their roles. Helmreich recalled a story shared by a colleague about a patrol member who stepped up during a tricky situation with a younger student.

"They were explaining exactly what we talked about in the interview," Helmreich said. "It was cool to see that they actually listened and were reiterating what we talked about."

As a reward for their hard work and commitment to safety throughout the year, patrol members look forward to an annual trip to a local minor league baseball game in Midland every May. Through daily duty, flag ceremonies, and mentoring the school's youngest students, North Saginaw’s Safety Patrol continues to demonstrate how empowering students with responsibility transforms them into role models for the entire school community.
