Team of Specialists Collaborate for Musical Safari Performance

How can teachers that teach five totally different things come together and put on a musical performance? Easy - just ask Greensboro Academy’s team of Specialists.

On March 22nd, fourth- and fifth-grade students put on a musical called “On Safari!” This was a huge collaboration between all five specials classes. Music Teacher Rachel Sowers taught the songs while Spanish Teacher Sasha Watterson worked with the speaking and acting roles. The dances were learned during physical education class, led by the team of PE Teacher Tyrik Agnew and Instructional Paras Michelle Fuller and Brianna Wray.

Props and scenery were created by students at the direction of Art Teacher Melissa Gleiser. Library Technology Specialist Angie Murray had her fourth-grade students make coloring books during class while learning the skill of making presentations in Google Slides.

But the real stars of the show were the students.

“The fourth- and fifth-grade students took on this multidisciplinary collaboration with so much enthusiasm,” Sowers said. “Teachers introduced this project to our performers through the lens of service learning. Giving back to the lower elementary students at our school through this performance was a joy for all involved.”

Student actors dressed up as giraffes, elephants, and safari guides. The musical went off without a hitch and was enjoyed by all K-3 students. Collaboration is a special thing at Greensboro Academy. It’s one of the reasons the school has outperformed the local district in all subjects for the past 16 years and was named a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School.
