Everyone in the Detroit Premier Academy community was invited to participate, and hundreds of people walked around the school, showing their support for breast cancer patients. With everyone committed to the cause, the walk became a true schoolwide celebration of unity and purpose.

Middle School ELA Teacher Olivia Adams is on the school’s Climate and Culture Committee, who organized the event. She said it was exciting to see the level of engagement from students.
“It was exciting to see students participating and have a connection to they why behind it,” Adams said. “Sometimes, they don’t always know they can make a difference, so it was an activity that showed them that the small things matter. If you can get one person to do something small and then another person, and another, and so on, that adds up to people making a big difference.”

The day full of fun directly benefited the Susan G. Komen Foundation, an organization dedicated to researching breast cancer and supporting patients. With this connection to a cause and high levels of engagement, the Detroit Premier community came together to make a big difference.
It also served as a reminder of who Detroit Premier wants students to be. Combining activities like this with the National Heritage Academies Moral Focus™ curriculum, it’s no wonder the school is inspiring students to greater.

“The event not only highlighted community engagement, but it also reinforced our mission to develop compassionate, service-minded leaders,” Adams said. “Teachers and staff used the walk as a teachable moment to help students understand the power of collective action and the importance of giving back to the community.”
To cap the walk off, participants crossed the finish line under a balloon arch created and designed by a staff member. With matching pink shirts, students made an impact, crossing the finish line one by one, and capping off a fun and meaningful day.

Keep up the great work, Detroit Premier!
