Chandler Woods Teacher Named a #MICharterHero for Inspiring Students Every Day

At Chandler Woods Charter Academy, it’s no surprise to see students inspired, challenged, and encouraged every day in the classroom of eighth grade Language Arts Teacher Kristin Helmbold. But now, her dedication has been recognized on a statewide level.

Kristin was named a #MICharterHero by the Michigan Association of Public-School Academies (MAPSA). President Dan Quisenberry says this award celebrates extraordinary teachers, leaders, and staff who make a difference in the lives of students at charter schools across Michigan.

“Every day, Michigan’s charter schools are powered by incredible heroes, and Mrs. Helmbold is a shining example of that truth,” he said. “Through her creativity and compassion, whether it’s guiding students through meaningful conversations on Parent Awareness Night or leading the unforgettable Eighth Grade Sneak Trip, she shows how charter teachers inspire growth not just in academics, but in character and community. MAPSA chose to honor her as our September Charter School Teacher Hero to spotlight the extraordinary impact charter educators have across our state.”

The award was presented as a surprise to Kristin. The cleverly orchestrated assembly lead by Middle School Dean Tim Rodriguez was pulled off without the secret getting out. You could see the shock on Kristin’s face, and even a few tears. When asked how she felt about receiving the award she expressed her surprise and gratitude.

“I am completely shocked,” she said. “I just thought I was going to an assembly. I come to school and do what I do every day for the kids. To be honored this way is such a privilege.”

Kristin has been teaching at Chandler Woods for 27 years, and her love for the school community is clear.

“I love charter schools. The reason I’ve stayed here is because I can keep growing and creating. NHA® supports everything I do. It feels like a big team I love working with parents, teachers, and administrators. It’s really just a big family.”

Her passion for teaching goes beyond curriculum. She creates a classroom environment where students are motivated to reach higher and dream bigger. Kristin hopes her award will send an important message to her students.

“Never work a job that feels like a job. Find something you love, where you can’t believe you’re getting paid to do it. And always shoot for the highest star. I tell my students, I will raise the bar high, and eventually, they’ll get there.”

Her advice is simple but powerful; work for what you love not for awards or money. When you do, she tells her students, “You will do great things.”

Kristin’s story is a reminder of the heart and commitment that make National Heritage Academies teachers so special.

Kristin was also recognized by Michigan Senator Mark Huizenga for her commitment to her students during the assembly.

We are proud to celebrate Kristin as a #MICharterHero and grateful for the impact she continues to have on her students, school, and community.
