Canton Charter Academy Celebrates Blue Ribbon Status

Canton Charter Academy gathered for a school-wide assembly, and students participated in a day of fun activities to celebrate being recognized as an “Exemplary High-Performing National Blue Ribbon School.”

“I am so proud to be working alongside such amazing deans and teachers,” said Kelie Fuller, principal of Canton Charter Academy. “We work so hard each day, and it is humbling that we’re being recognized.”

This award is among the highest honors for which a school can be named. It was only bestowed on 349 schools across the country in 2018. Of those recipients, from 47 states, only 13 were in Michigan.

The assembly featured several speakers, including Principal Fuller; Brian Britton, National Heritage Academies President and CEO; Cathy Henkenberns, director of school quality; Kandy Lazell, school lead; and Patrick Williams, Canton township supervisor. The celebration ended with a ribbon cutting and a presentation of the award and banner that will be hung in the school.

Students and staff wore celebratory T-shirts throughout the day and participated in a variety of activities, including jumping in bounce houses, digging for blue ribbons in blindfolded treasure hunts, playing leap frog, and competing in hallway disc golf. Later in the day, students enjoyed a pizza party and cupcakes.

Canton, a 5-Star School of Excellence, has outperformed its local school district since 2007-08 and has outperformed the state in 100 percent of grade and subject combinations.
