Queen's Grant Welcomes NY Times Author

Alan Gratz, author of "Refugee" and a New York Times best-selling author, spoke to seventh-grade students at Queen's Grant Community School about his writing process and answered questions.

The book, "Refugee", was selected as the sixth-eighth graders annual All Middle School Summer Read program. The book has been on the best-sellers list for six months. It tells the story of three young refugees in three different situations: Mahmoud in modern Syria, Isabel in 1990’s Cuba, and Josef in WWII Germany.

After his presentation, Gratz signed books for the students and took pictures with them.

"It was a great way to kick off the school year and inspire excitement about reading," said Melissa Carpenter, library and technology specialist who organized the visit.

"It was truly a special day," said Krista Tolchin, principal of Queen's Grant.
