300 Detroit Premier Academy Scholars Receive Bicycles from Free Bikes 4 Kidz Detroit

Paige Walker’s job as a Student Supports Coordinator with Communities in Schools at Detroit Premier Academy (DPA) is to provide resources to families and help students stay in school. The biggest smile she’s had recently was watching many of those kids leave school – with their new bikes.

Communities in Schools at DPA partnered recently with Free Bikes 4 Kidz Detroit to distribute 300 free bicycles to students.

“It meant so much to the students and parents at Detroit Premier Academy,” Walker said. “Watching the kids pick out their bikes and ride them out of the building brought a huge smile to my face.”
Many of the scholars at DPA live in the surrounding neighborhood, so it is more than just a fun way to get exercise – the bikes are a means of transportation for the students to get to school.

“Seeing that my job as the Student Support Coordinator is to provide resources to the students and families to help students stay in school, these bikes were proof that support can come in all shapes and can even be fun,” Walker said.

Walker said she had initially requested 150 bikes, but the organization was able to double that, which surprised many in the school.

“Everyone at FB4K Detroit was super helpful, I could not have done what I did without them,” Walker said. They helped me load the bikes from the warehouse into the U-Haul and provided us with more bikes than we asked for. The best part was how excited they are to work with us again next year. I am so thankful for Free Bikes 4 Kidz Detroit as an organization, and I cannot wait to see the impact on our students for years to come.”

Free Bikes 4 Kidz has given out over 7,000 bikes to kids of Detroit and nearly 100,000 throughout the nation.

Detroit Premier Academy is part of NHA, a charter school management company in Grand Rapids, Mich. with 98 tuition-free, public charter schools across nine states, serving more than 60,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
