Matthews Scholars Prepare for Future Leadership Roles, Excel in Competition
Four scholars from Matthews Charter Academy have qualified to compete in the National Beta Club Competition in Kentucky this summer.
Beta Club is a nonprofit organization that focuses on developing leadership qualities in today’s youth. It recognizes high academic achievement, promotes character and social responsibility, and encourages service involvement to school and community.

“Nine of our fourth-grade scholars just got back from the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro,” Matthews Admissions Representative Mary Funderburk said. “There were over 3,800 people registered and we placed in five events.”
Among those who qualified for nationals were:
- Taryn Barham - first place, fourth grade science.
- Bellevie Huang - first place, solo dance.
- Iheoma Okoroiwu - first place, fourth grade math, and second place in fourth/fifth grade poetry.
- Carsyn Chunn - third place, fourth grade ELA.
Scholars in Beta Club were chosen from the following criteria:
Achievement: High academics and attendance.
Character: Do you show characteristics that follow our school's Moral Focus (wisdom, respect, gratitude, self-control, perseverance, courage, encouragement, compassion, integrity)?
Leadership: Do you show leadership skills and attitude?
Service: Have you demonstrated that you like to lead the way by serving others?

“The national competition with be held June 21-22,” Funderburk said. “There are some really great things happening at Matthews.”
