Legacy Bike Bus Encourages Activity, Teamwork on the Way to School
Every morning this fall, a Legacy Charter Academy teacher pedaled through the school’s neighborhood and picked up 10 to 15 students along the way.
Legacy offered students the Bike Bus, a program that lets students ride their bikes to school together with Physical Education Teacher Tim Havern leading the way. Students met at set pickup spots, then rode through the neighborhood as a team.
Safety always came first. Havern taught students hand signals and how to read traffic. He also taught them to look out for one another. The group arrived at school together, on time, and ready to learn each day.
For Havern, leading the ride was a labor of love.
"It's awesome to teach the kids about a healthy lifestyle activity and bike safety in general," Havern said. "For me, it's honestly just fun. I like talking with the kids. We have chats we might not have at school, like about Pokémon."

His care went beyond the morning and afternoon rides. When a student’s bike needed a minor fix, Havern brought it to a local repair shop so no one missed a ride.
Havern was happy to take the lead when Student and Family Liaison Shantel Young proposed the idea in the spring of 2026.
Students were eager to bring the activity back this year. Families remain engaged, building a connection with Havern who said some parents text him every morning about their student’s participation.
With darker mornings and colder weather ahead, the Bike Bus is closed for the season. But it’s become a popular part of the morning for Legacy students, so Havern plans to bring it back this spring.
Way to go Mr. Havern, Ms. Young, and the entire team at Legacy!
