National Junior Honor Society Shows Courage, Takes Plunge

NHA Communications Team

Greensboro Academy’s National Junior Honor Society recently took part in a fundraising effort with a bit of a sting. The group participated in the Cool School’s Polar Plunge on Feb. 23, and certainly showed February’s Moral Focus virtue of courage as they hopped into that frigid water.

All funds raised for the Polar Plunge went directly to the Special Olympics. The group from Greensboro Academy finished in fourth place by raising $2,400.

“We had 24 students participate and even though it was a rainy, chilly day, they really stepped up and showed true courage,” NJHS Adviser Angie Murray said. “I could tell they were not only proud about taking the plunge but knowing the money they raised is used in such a great way.”

It’s that kind of dedication that has helped Greensboro Academy outperform the local district for the past 16 years.

“Special Olympics has been the partner organization for Greensboro Academy’s NJHS for several years, but this is the first time they participated in an event like this. It will definitely now be a yearly tradition.”

Last year Greensboro Academy’s NJHS raised $1,000 for Special Olympics with various fundraisers around the school. This year, including the polar plunge, a student-run middle school concession stand, and other fundraisers, they have currently raised $3,600 and hope to hit $4,000 by the end of the school year.

Great work showing courage and giving back, Greensboro!
