Scholars’ Votes Support Spirit Week Canned Good Drive

An annual door decorating contest has turned into a big win for families in need. In honor of spirit week, scholars at Chandler Woods Charter Academy were asked to vote for their favorite decorated door – with canned goods.

The annual event presented the theme of “Travel the World,” with each door representing a different place on the globe. Each year the school collects food for North Kent Connect in Rockford, Mich., helping families who have daily needs.

Students voted early and often, bringing in 3,034 canned goods and non-perishable items for donation. One classroom per grade level wing with the most canned goods was chosen as winners and celebrated with an ice cream party.

The school, which outperforms the local district in all subjects, bested the previous year’s total of canned goods by nearly 2,000 items.

“We are so proud of our Chandler Woods students, staff, and families for turning a spirited week of fun and school pride into a huge act of kindness for their community,” EL Paraprofessional Angie Blank said.

The spirit week also included special themed dress-up days, grade-level spirit cheers, and plenty of school colors of orange and blue adorning the hallways and classrooms.
