Advantage Students Celebrate MLK Weekend with Day of Service

Advantage Charter Academy students kicked off MLK Celebration Weekend with a unique volunteer opportunity, giving back to their community in the process.

Scholars visited Baton Roots, which is a community farm supported by The Walls Project, an organization dedicated to helping communities break through societal walls that discourage or prevent safe and healthy living. Advantage students rolled up their sleeves and put in some elbow grease to do hands-on farm work. The group harvested green onions and dill straight from the garden, helping put fresh herbs and vegetables in their community’s hands.

The experience also included education on sustainable agriculture in an urban garden, giving students inspiration to grow their own garden one day, no matter where they live. Students learned about more than just urban agriculture, they also learned about teamwork, stewardship, and giving back to the community.

The partnership was possible thanks to Dr. Ashlyn Harrison, the executive director of the Louisiana region of The Walls Project. With partnerships like these that help students grow and inspire their futures, it’s no wonder Advantage is ranked the top school in Baker, Louisiana.

Students volunteered on the opening day of MLK Fest 2026 at Baton Roots, offering students the opportunity to connect with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of action and leadership through service. Through this meaningful experience, students not only learned about service, but they also lived it.
