Walker Puts Its Own Creative Spin on ArtPrize

ArtPrize represents the culmination of hours and hours of work, as artists from around the world display their creations around Grand Rapids. For the students and parents of Walker Charter Academy, it marks the beginning of their own ArtPrize.

Walker’s ArtPrize begins when the city’s competition is underway, with students submitting their entries after Thanksgiving break. It’s a community art competition open to any Walker student or family member.

Entries ranging from sculptures, paintings, and drawings are displayed in the school hallways in December. Students and families cast their votes, and finalists are awarded during January’s Moral Focus assembly.

“Walker ArtPrize is a community event that provided a venue for students and staff to create, display, and talk about art,” said Art Teacher Shawna Turnbull. “I am so proud of my students and the creativity displayed in their work. There was so much enthusiasm and excitement amongst the students as they voted for the favorite works of art.”

This year’s winner was fourth-grader Oliver Goins, who took the top prize for his house filled with various characters made from pipe cleaners. Turnbull said there were more than 50 entries this year. First place received $300, second $150, third $100, and winners also were announced for the best of each grade.
