Willow Charter Academy Saturday School Provides Extra Support

Most people expect to see Willow Charter Academy full of students during the week, but one might be surprised to see students in the classroom on Saturdays. This is in part to Willow’s Saturday School, offered to all students in grades third through seventh.

Writing is the focus of Saturday School, a specific area teachers noted students could use additional lessons. The extra support has proven to not only help students with their academics, but provide a sense of confidence.

“Giving our scholars an opportunity to learn even more on Saturdays has been very beneficial,” said Principal Dr. Ronnie Harrison.  “We were able to spend additional time on writing and in turn scholars became more confident with the writing process as tutors devoted time and attention to them in small group sessions.”

The small group sessions are a key part of Saturday School. The smaller groups allow more one on one attention for students. With nearly 60 students taking advantage of Saturday School, Willow Charter Academy is thrilled to see the progress in students.

But Saturday School is not without a little fun. The school implemented a treasure chest. The chest is filled with prizes that students can pick from, if they earn it.

“The treasure chest is a fun way to encourage students,” Dr. Harrison said. “They can earn points based on behavior, progress, and overall positive attitude. It has been a great success so far.”

With the school year nearing a close, Willow Charter Academy hopes to continue Saturday School next year and implement a similar program this summer.
