Fourth Grader Recognized for Saving Life

A fourth-grade student at Warrendale Charter Academy was recognized in a school assembly Oct. 12 by the Detroit Fire Commissioner for her bravery and courage in saving her grandmother’s life last summer.

Jada Anderson, 9, was honored by Commissioner Eric Jones for calling 911, following directions, and staying calm until emergency services arrived.

Inez Sullivan, a Detroit dispatcher who talked Anderson through the steps to perform CPR on her grandmother over the phone, told reporters, “She was marvelous. She was awesome. She followed all of my instructions.”

Sullivan and first responders were also recognized during the assembly.

Anderson’s mother and the middle school dean at Warrendale, Janae Anderson, thanked her co-workers at Warrendale for their love and support during the past couple of months. Sadly, her mom died a few days later.

“I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for the love and support for my family during this difficult time,” she said. “It's a great feeling to be a part of a team who cares so much.”

Jada’s story was featured in local TV news reports that evening.

After the assembly, local firefighters passed out junior firefighter hats, coloring books, badges, and lanyards to several classes.
