Mona L. Boersma,  Principal


Albion College: Bachelor's degree and teaching certification

Previous education experience and number of years in the field:

Ms. Boersma has more than 20 years of educational experience, with the past 15 here at Walton. She previously served as the dean for kindergarten through second grade, ELL coordinator, reading specialist, and fourth-grade teacher.

What do you like most about working h​ere?

I love the kids, families, staff, and the support of Walton and NHA.

Personal i​nformation

In her free time, Mrs. Boersma enjoys spending time with her family, playing baseball, swimming, skiing, and watching funny movies.   
ave been married for over 20 years (I know…that’s a long time!). I have two sons, Jake and Ryan, that keep me laughing and busy. We have a giant dog, Scout, that is finally starting to calm down now that he is getting older. My family and I love to swim, be outside, watch movies, ride bikes, and the boys love video games!

Previous experie​nce

I previously taught 4th grade at Birmingham Detroit Country Day School for three years. I have taught 3rd and 5th grade students in two charter schools in Detroit. Prior to coming to NHA, I was an Assistant Principal in a K–5 charter school in Detroit, and a 6–12 charter school in Dearborn Heights.

What do you like most ab​out working here?

Walton has worked very hard to create a positive, nurturing, and challenging academic environment for the children we serve each day. I appreciate the effort, enthusiasm, and dedication that teachers and support staff have demonstrated to ensure that meaningful learning takes place each and every day. I truly look forward to going to work each and every day.

Other work experience​

I coached the High School Girl’s Varsity Basketball teams at Detroit Country Day and the Academy for Business and Technology. I was also the Varsity Baseball coach at Detroit Country Day during my three year tenure. This year is my sixth year as Walton’s Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer team coach.

Personal information​

I recently celebrated my 30th wedding anniversary with my wife, Debra. We have two daughters named Lindsey and Lauren.

Previous experience

I began my educational career with NHA in August 1999. I loved starting my education career in a fifth grade classroom at Walton. When I taught seventh grade English I had the best job in the school.  I then moved out of the classroom to mentor new teachers which began my administration experience.​

What do you like most about working here?

What I like most about Walton Charter Academy is the feeling of being a family with our students, parents, and staff members. You can walk in our school and see everyone working together with the goal of students learning to be college ready.

Personal In​formation

I am married and I have been blessed with two daughters. They are finished with college and have started working in their careers. 
I love history, football, reading, and going to relax at our cabin.

Previous experience ​

Previous to coming to Walton, I taught marketing at Pontiac Central High School, and worked for the district's truancy department. I also taught science and physical education at Roane County Christian School (Tennessee).

Other work experience

 I have coached basketball at various levels for 15 years​.

What do you like most about wo​rking here?

I love working with the students and families. I also enjoy the family atmosphere here at Walton! 

Personal i​nformation

I have been married to my wonderful wife Renee for 10 years. We have two children, Christopher Jr. and Corey, who both attend Walton.
