The “C” in Summerfield Charter Academy (SCA) doesn’t just stand for “charter”, but for “caring community.” Students and staff at SCA live by the motto that they are “simply better together” and came together to raise over $3,200 in their Change for a Change drive.
The money raised will be donated to Ranfurly Homes for Children to support children in the Bahamas, many of whom have been affected by Hurricane Dorian this year.
“We believe in helping our neighbors near and far, and this service project aligned with various Moral Focus virtues, such as compassion and encouragement,” said Maranda Robertson, eighth-grade language arts teacher at SCA. “Our middle school students are working on being leaders in the areas of character and service, and this project gave them the opportunity to do just that.”
Ranfurly Homes for Children exists to provide comprehensive childcare services for displaced children due to death, separation, abuse, abandonment, illness. or other unfortunate circumstances. Ranfurly aims to offer children a place where they can feel safe and secure, but moreover, to provide a place that they can call a home.
“I wanted to participate in the Change for a Change because Hurricane Dorian tore the Bahamas to pieces and a lot of families are stressed out to the max. The least I could do is send change for these families,” said Janiyah Selby, sixth-grade student at SCA.
SCA National Junior Honor Society students voted to collect change for hurricane victims in the Bahamas because they were connected to the Ranfurly Homes for Children by a staff member at Greensboro Academy, a nearby National Heritage Academies (NHA) school, who has family connections to the Bahamas.
“When we all come together and contribute just a little, it can make a huge impact,” said Robertson.
