School Geography Champ Heads to State Competition

Alyssa Caldito, an eighth-grade student at South Canton Charter Academy, will compete in the statewide Geography Bee this year at Western Michigan University.

To qualify for the event, Caldito beat out more than 400 students in grades 4-8 at her school. She was awarded a medal on Jan. 18 for winning the school-wide competition.

Each school’s winner must take a test to qualify to compete in the statewide competition. Caldito qualified for the upcoming statewide competition. This is her second year of qualifying for the statewide competition, although she did not place in last year’s Geography Bee.
To prepare for the competition, Caldito took online quizzes and studied the National Geographic books published for the event, said her social studies teacher at South Canton, Mark Ureel.
“It’s very stressful because I’m competing against students all over the state!” Caldito remarked.
