South Canton Teachers Earn First Place in GVSU Competition

South Canton Scholars Charter Academy placed first beating out nearly 70 other charter schools at a competition held at Grand Valley State University’s Learning Network on March 18.

National Heritage Academies schools placed in first, second, and third place.

For the contest, the schools were divided into three cohorts: K-6 (Detroit), 6-12 (Detroit), and K-12 (West Michigan).

Only the top three schools in each category received a prize.

In the K-6 category for Detroit area schools, South Canton won first place ($2,500), Metro placed second ($1,500), and Achieve placed third ($1,000). Excel placed third ($1,000) in the K-6 category for West Michigan.

The schools were asked to design and implement an instructional model to use in classrooms this school year. Schools that showed the strongest evidence of this won financial assistance from the GVSU CSO to continue their efforts.

“These schools created magnificent portfolios of their work defining, developing, and implementing instructional models throughout this school year,” GVSU officials wrote on the office’s Facebook page. “Great job to these schools and all other teams that participated in this year's Learning Network.”
