Charter School Teacher Chosen for Science Program

Macomb Daily

A teacher at the Prevail Academy charter school in Mount Clemens is one of 40 teachers nationwide selected to participate in a national program this summer for science instructors.
Robert Tonti, who has taught for seven years at Prevail, will participate in the Siemens Teachers as Researchers (STARs) program in July at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.
Siemens provides the opportunity for middle- and high-school science teachers to develop their Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skills.
“I am anticipating improving on my foundation of the scientific method and looking forward to becoming a real scientist for two weeks,” Tonti said.
“I also hope to do many labs that I can bring back to my students in order to support the STEM disciplines.”
Tonti previously participated in a Space Academy for Educators at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, where he experienced astronaut training. He also spent one week at Michigan State University’s National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory.
The Prevail Academy is a free public charter school that enrolls students from grades K-8.
