Christy Morrin Named Principal of Matthews Charter Academy

New Public Charter School Set to Open Fall 2016

2/12/2016

Christy MorrinMATTHEWS, N.C. Feb. 12, 2016— Christy Morrin has been named founding principal of Matthews Charter Academy, a free public charter school scheduled to open August 2016 in Matthews. In partnership with a local Board of directors, the school is managed by National Heritage Academies (NHA), which operates eight public charter schools in North Carolina.

“I am excited and honored to serve as the founding principal of Matthews Charter Academy,” said Morrin. “I think it is important to bring additional school choice to the families of this community and I look forward to providing a school that will bring a high quality education to all students.”

For the past 14 years, Morrin has served as principal of Queen’s Grant Community School, a NHA sister school, where she was also the founding principal. Prior to her time in North Carolina, Morrin served as principal of Chandler Woods Charter Academy, an NHA school in Belmont, Mich. She brings more than 30 years of educational experience to the position.

Morrin received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Southeast Missouri State University and her master’s degree in educational leadership from Grand Valley State University.

As an NHA-partner school, Matthew’s Charter Academy’s curriculum will be built around a strong emphasis on math, reading, science, and social studies—the foundation for college readiness. The goal is for every student to be on a college bound path before they enter high school.

“My goal as principal is to ensure each student is challenged and supported in reaching their academic goals. When a student leaves our school, they will have the confidence and knowledge to take on their next educational endeavor,” Morrin said.

The school will host two enrollment information meetings on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Both meetings will take place at Idlewild Baptist Church, 12701 Idlewild Rd in Matthews. Both meetings will cover identical information. Ms. Morrin will be in attendance for both meetings.

Information on Matthews Charter Academy is available on the school’s website www.matthewscharteracademy.org, on Twitter (http://twitter.com/MatthewsCharter), or on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/matthewscharteracademy/).

Matthews Charter Academy is a free public charter school that will serve students in grades kindergarten through sixth for the 2016-2017 school year. The school will add one grade level per year, until a full K-8 school is established.
