Student Achievements on M-STEP Celebrated

Great Oaks Celebrates Student Achievements

Great Oaks Academy celebrated 29 students who tested proficient in all areas on the Michigan Student Test of Education Progress (M-STEP) during a dinner on Oct. 20 at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Warren, Mich. Additionally, eight of those students were specially honored for achieving “advanced” status in all areas on the state-mandated test.

“At Great Oaks our goal is to not just educate each child, but to prepare them for college and beyond,” said Damon Williams, principal at Great Oaks. “We want to honor these students who are laying the groundwork for future academic success and college readiness.”

Students were honored with a trophy, a gift bag, and a t-shirt. Great Oaks students also performed during the event and guest speaker John Cogley, director of school quality for National Heritage Academies, addressed the students.

“It’s a great reward for those students who did well on the M-STEP,” said Williams. “We also want to be able to motivate them to continue doing their best.”

Principal Williams plans on making the celebration dinner an annual tradition. Williams hopes that each student at Great Oaks will try to achieve proficiency in order to be able to attend the event next year.
