Toni Nunemaker, a music teacher at Excel Charter Academy, published a book this year about her journey to healing and forgiveness after her grandson, Connor Verkerke, 9, was murdered by a 12-year-old boy on a playground two years ago.
After the tragedy, employees at the National Heritage Academy Service Center helped her by giving financially and encouraging her.
As a way to express her gratitude, Nunemaker gave away almost 100 signed books during a private book signing in February.
“I received so many cards, letters, and all my needs were taken care of by so many people here,” said Nunemaker at the book reception. “I am very thankful.”
