Seventy-three former Detroit Merit students have returned to the school this year to work with students as volunteers.
They help the students with sight words, math facts, reading assignments, and playing educational games. The volunteers also help the teachers by making copies, distributing flyers, and stuffing envelopes.
Principal Sandra Terry-Martin says the volunteers are excellent role models to the students. The majority of the volunteers are currently enrolled in private high schools thanks to a very successful high school placement program at Detroit Merit.
"This is a testament to the caring community we have at DMA as well as a valuable lesson of volunteerism for all of our former and current students," said Martin.
